The Wayback is a virtual reality film series directed by Kevin Thomas, with Dan Cole and Andy Garnett as the creative partners, in which Thomas directs recreations of national moments in time that are designed to trigger memories and spark conversations for those living with dementia, their carers and loved ones. The 360-degree films immerse the viewer in incredibly detailed, faithfully recreated and positive moments from the past - which evoke the happy feelings that went with them - in order to create positive connections and conversations in the present.

While few substantial positives have emerged from 2020, the compassion of communities helping those in need has been one of the bright spots in a very dark landscape.
This charmingly poignant commercial focuses on the recipients themselves: elderly and infirm, yes, but still very much people with passions, wants, and needs. Director Kevin Thomas does a good job of swerving the heart-wrenching statistic route here, instead emphasising the valuable place which vulnerable people occupy in the world.

CELEBRATING TALENT, LEADERS AND THEIR EXPERIENCE
Starting his career as a creative, Kevin Thomas is now one of the most in-demand directors. He was Art Director at AMV BBDO before progressing to Head of Art at Lowe’s and before launching his own production company, Thomas Thomas, he was Creative Director at M&C Saatchi. He began directing and was soon winning Cannes, D&AD and BTA awards for Sony PlayStation, Virgin, Thorntons and Nike. In 2011 Thomas received the accolade of being included in the Top 10 directors of the decade in Shots Magazine. He recently won a D&AD pencil and an AICP award for The Wayback, a virtual reality film that is shifting perspectives everywhere.

Alex Gibson, Head of Brand Marketing at Uswitch, says, “Offering our customers an even simpler way to switch is a great way to celebrate twenty years of being a consumer champion. Our new campaign brings this to life with humour and charm.”

Laura Hyde Foundation
The Laura Hyde Foundation has launched a campaign raising awareness of the looming mental-health crisis on the front line of the coronavirus pandemic.
Created pro bono by Havas UK agencies, the ad shows healthcare professionals wearing masks as they talk about their feelings and struggles while confronting the outbreak. It ends with the line: “There’s no mask for mental health.”
It was directed Kevin Thomas through Thomas Thomas. Havas London handled creative, while Cake and Ekino developed social and digital elements. Havas Media is the media agency.

Along with a complete overhaul of their look and logo, price comparison site Uswitch have launched their biggest commercial campaign for twenty years this spring - kicking off with this playful ode to money well-saved.
Boasting quirky visuals and a welcome sense of humour, director Kevin Thomas’s ad marks the next step up from 2017’s coach-focused campaign - as Uswitch have become increasingly sophisticated in their advertising strategy. Hopefully this means the Philip Glenister days are consigned to the history books for good.
